Pollenzo was a very important Roman town. It was here that the celebrated battle of Pollenzo was fought in 402 and in Medieval times it became the home of the Benedictine monks of the order of Novalesa-Breme and of the monks of Caramagna. Bitter contention in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries between the most important towns of lower Piedmont resulted in the almost complete destruction of the fortifications which dated back to the fifth century. Pollenzo became the county seat of the patrizio viscount Antonio porro in the fourteenth century. A couple of decades later his stronghold built in 1386, and of which only the donjon (a cylindrical tower, 46 metres high) remains today, became a prestigious feudal residence of the marquises of Romagnano. They were also the counts of Pollenzo and they therefore initiated huge renovations to the castle in the mannerist style in the second half of the fifteenth century. This historical, artistic phase was however completely demolished between 1832 and 1847. In those years in fact most of the
medieval part of Pollenzo was pulled down to give place
to new buildings which were romantic in style. Many artists including the painter
Bellosio, the architect, Ernest Melano ,the ebony worker,
Moncalvo and the sculptor Gaggini were involved in the
reconstruction. The idea was to remodel in Medieval style the town with its square and fountain, the gothic church of St. vittore, the Albertina cascina, the castle and above all the Agency. |
